Brittany Maynard: It’s more than death with dignity

Brittany Maynard has passed from this life.  This brave but unfortunate 29-year-old woman with incurable progressive brain cancer drew public attention by choosing to go public with her choice about end of life care.
“Brittany suffered increasingly frequent and longer seizures, severe head and neck pain, and stroke-like symptoms,” according to a statement Sunday night from Sean Crowley, spokesman for Compassion & Choices, a national nonprofit working to expand end-of-life options.  “As symptoms grew more severe, she chose to abbreviate the dying process by taking the aid-in-dying medication she had received months ago. This choice is authorized under the Oregon Death With Dignity Act. She died as she intended — peacefully in her bedroom, in the arms of her loved ones,” the statement said.

Its Not a Contest

Its not a contest to see who has the biggest list of ailments or who is the healthiest. A few weeks ago, while at the gym, I met a woman who was in the breast cancer club - we recognized our lymphedema sleeves, which leads to conversations, how long has it been (15 years or so for her).

We chatted a bit about the benefits of our gym for dilapidated people. She said she has Parkinsons and they worked very well with her. I said they had been so good with me working through my RA and fibromyalgia and her reply was 'okay, you win'.

I thought to myself, no it isn't a contest and I don't think I wanted her diagnosis either. She had tremors visibly.

Why did she think it was a contest? I have no idea. Maybe then she could think of me as someone in worse shape so she could feel better about herself? I have no idea.

Vegan pizza

After I got the kids off to school today, I spent pretty much all morning balancing my checkbook. I guess that's what happens when you go a month without writing anything down! While I did that, and paid a bunch of bills, I watched last night's episode of Parenthood. I absolutely love that show, and I'm so sad that it's on the final season!

I was SO cold this morning that it was hard to get motivated to go out for a run. When I woke up and checked the temp, I was shocked to see that it was 24 degrees outside. I was really tempted to just skip the run and take a hot shower instead, but I knew I'd feel better if I just did it.

I decided to go run at the track again. I feel like I've run more miles on the track in the past three weeks than I have in the past three years combined, but I kind of like running there. It's quiet, there's no traffic, and it feels nice and soft to run on. Normally, I do long runs on Fridays; but I decided to run the Monroe Half this Sunday, so I shifted the schedule a bit, and just had 3.5 miles to do today.

My planned easy pace was 9:53-10:47/mile. After a half mile, I was surprised to see my pace was in the low 9:00's, because it felt pretty easy. I don't know if that means the speed work + cross training is actually working, or maybe I was just having a good day, but I'm happy with that! I consciously tried to slow down a bit, because I want to save my energy for Sunday. I ended up doing 3.5 miles in 32:32, a 9:18/mile pace. (I forgot to press the stop button on my Garmin, until a few minutes after I finished).

My plan for Sunday is to just run at a pretty easy pace. I think I'll feel good for about 8-10 miles, and then it'll get tough, so I want to plan on saving some energy. My longest run since August was 10 miles, and that was a month ago. I run enough that I can pretty much just go run a half-marathon on a whim, but that's not to say it'll be easy. I expect to be sore afterward! But I really like this particular race, and if I take it nice and easy, I should be able to enjoy it. There is also a chance that my brother Nathan will run it with me--I hope so. I'm planning to run about a 10:15-10:30 pace, but if I happen to feel really good that day, I may aim for sub-10:00.

For dinner tonight, I made what ended up being one of the best pizzas I've ever tasted--and it was cheese-less! We always used to do "Pizza Fridays" and make homemade pizza, but we haven't done that in a long time, so I wanted to do it today. I made my favorite whole wheat crust recipe, and divided the dough into fourths so that we could each make our own individual pizza.

After getting home from the grocery store, I realized we didn't have any pizza sauce; so I just took a can of tomato paste and added a touch of sugar, some Italian seasonings, and enough water to thin it out. I decided to make an all-veggie pizza with no cheese.

I chopped up garlic (lots of garlic!), peppers, onions, zucchini, and mushrooms, and sautéed them in olive oil. Then to assemble my pizza, I spread the tomato paste mixture on the pre-baked crust, sprinkled on some red pepper flakes, and topped it with the veggie mixture. I sprinkled some black olives on it, too, and then baked it at 450 for about 10 minutes.

I wasn't sure how it would taste, especially with that tomato paste-sauce, but it was AMAZING. I'm already looking forward to making the same thing next Friday! I didn't miss the cheese at all, and the entire pizza was only 9 PointsPlus (crust was 6, sauce was 1, olives were 1, and the oil from the veggies was 1).

One of these days, I may try doing a vegan challenge just for a month, to make myself get more creative with food (vegetables in particular). I'm not planning to become vegan, but I do think that it would be a good challenge to try. Speaking of challenges, I forgot to pick a challenge for November. Maybe I'll consider the cross training (bike riding) once per week my challenge for the month.

Jerry's off work tomorrow and Sunday, so I'm not sure what our plans are yet, but I am hoping to have a pretty low-key day tomorrow. I love cold weather, but it makes me want to curl up under the electric blanket and watch a movie ;)

Lots Of Good Information About Muscle Building Can Be Found In The Below Article

You may have been putting off building your muscles because you've heard that it takes a lot of time and dedication. However, the truth is that muscle building is dependent on how much you know about effective ways to do it. Read on for some tips about how to effectively build your muscles.

Do not forget to get enough veggies when you are trying to build muscles. Unfortunately, too many diets that focus on building muscles all but ignore vegetables. Vegetables provide valuable nutrients that foods high in proteins and carbohydrates generally lack. They also contain high levels of fiber. Fiber helps your body be more effective in utilizing protein.

Regardless of how frequent or intense your workout sessions are, if you are not eating sufficiently, your body will not have enough proteins to build muscle. It is therefore critical to eat meals often. You should strive to consume at least 20 grams of protein every three hours. In addition, it is more important to eat often rather than to eat large portions.

Eat a lot of protein. It's a well known fact that the more protein your body can store, the more muscle you can build. Try to have at least one gram of the protein you need for every pound that you weigh. For instance, a 150 pound woman should attempt to eat approximately 150 grams, meat and other protein, every day.

Eat meat to help build up your muscles. Consume 1 gram of meat that is full of protein for each pound that you weigh. That way, you will be able to stockpile protein, and if you have more protein, you will be better able to develop the type of muscles you desire.

When trying to build muscle mass quickly, smaller is better. Smaller sets with more weight will add muscle more quickly than longer sets. Between 8-12 repetitions for each set is about the ideal. Give your body plenty of rest between workout routines to allow the body to heal. Muscle is built as the muscles heal.

If you cannot get to the gym for some reason, do not skip your workout altogether. You can simply do chin-ups, pushups and dips in your home. Even with all of the fancy equipment at the gym, they still remain the best forms of upper body building that you can do.

If you have been working out for a while, though you feel like your muscles are not getting as big as you would like them to be, try to focus your workouts on your biggest muscles. Work more on your chest, legs and back. This will help to increase your protein synthesis, which will help your muscles to get larger.

Working out to build muscle is most efficient if you focus on large muscle groups. These include the back, legs, and chest. Implementing workouts that focus on these groups will do the most work in the shortest amount of time, meaning that you'll grow muscle more quickly and easily than with other workouts.

Keep in mind that there is no one method to build muscle that will work fast, effectively, and in the area that you really want to target. Muscle building takes work, and it takes time too. If you want to see success you must come up with a solid plan and remain committed to it. Overnight success stories do not happen when it comes to building muscle, so be sure to take it slow.

Good sleep will work well with your muscle-building efforts. Since muscle building and recovery go hand in hand, you need to make certain your body is getting all the rest it needs. No getting enough sleep or rest can interfere with muscle building results and may even lead to injuries.

Try staggering sets of muscle building exercises. This method is excellent for smaller muscle groups, which include forearms and calves, that are lacking. Staggered sets involve performing extra sets of these smaller muscle groups while resting in between doing sets of your larger muscle groups. An example of this is doing standing calf raises in between bench presses.

As you can see from this article, there's a lot more to muscle building than simply working out every day. You have to use the most efficient methods possible if you hope to see results. Incorporate the tips you just read into your plan to build your muscles and soon you'll see the results you're hoping for.

Is there really a best way to lose weight fast? You may have wanted to start a diet many times in the past, only to shy away from it because of some of the things you've heard or the self-doubt you have to succeed. Try not to fall victim to the myriad of diet myths circulating around online. The best way to lose weight fast is with a healthy balance of proper eating (most of the time) and exercise.

There are many myths about how to lose weight fast, and we'll dispel 6 of the most common ones below.

1. Starve Yourself.

The number one myth people think is the best way to lose weight fast is by eliminating as many calories as possible from your diet or by starving yourself. This is an extremely unhealthy way to go about it because your body goes into starvation mode, shutting down as much weight loss as possible. Some people only want to know how to lose weight fast because they have an outfit they want to fit into for a special occasion coming up next week. Don't wait until the last minute to start a diet.

2. Only Eat Certain Foods All The Time.

Another myth about losing weight fast is the one that tells us to only eat a specific type of food every single day. Diet fads like grapefruit, pepper-laden water, and even hot dog diets are just a few of the very unusual rapid weight loss ideas in recent times. Following a dangerous fad diet means your body is not getting the essential nutritional requirements it needs to protect against illnesses and remain healthy.

3. You Must Always Stick With Your Diet.

You may have also heard that the best way to lose weight fast is to never stray from your diet. If you do, you'll need to exercise for hours to make up for it. This isn't true. It's okay to have that fudge brownie once in awhile. You only need to adjust your calorie intake for the day. There's really no need to exercise for hours just to compensate for one little treat.

4. You Can't Eat Before You Go To Bed.

One myth you may hear is the one that says you can't eat before you go to bed, because you'll get fat in your sleep. This one isn't true because the best way to lose weight fast is to eat healthy and watch your caloric intake for the day. Having a light snack before bed isn't going to make a big difference unless it's a 7-course meal or a full gallon of ice cream.

5. You Cannot Eat Between Meals.

How about the myth that says you can't eat anything between meals if you want to lose weight quickly? It's better that you do eat snacks. Eat smaller meals throughout the day to keep your hunger satisfied. By eliminating snacks between meals, you're only going to make yourself hungrier at meal times, which causes you to eat a lot more than you really need just to satisfy your hunger.

6. Don't Eat Diary Products.

There's yet another myth that says you should not eat any dairy products because they are too fattening. Dairy products have nutrients that your body needs, so you should have some dairy. Some research shows that those who eat dairy products have greater weight loss success! Just make sure you control how much you eat and choose the low-fat varieties.

Slimming Muffin Top Exercises

Broadly speaking, a muffin top is fat that forms around the belly area and spills over the waistband. Such overhanging flesh does not look good especially when a person wears tight fitting clothes or garments that do not cover the waistline, for example, low-rise jeans and cropped tops. Are there good muffin top exercises to get rid of this back fat? You bet there is.

How Does A Muffin Top Happen?

Although anyone can develop a muffin top, women are more likely to develop fat around the belly area compared to men, according to an article on WebMD, and this usually happens when women are undergoing menopause because estrogen levels fall leading to redistribution of body fat from the hips and thighs to the abdominal area. Additionally, you may also develop a muffin top if you have a sweet tooth for foods that contain saturated fats. A study carried out by researchers at Uppsala University found that people who eat foods rich in saturated fats tend to develop fat around the waist, but this is not the case for people who eat foods that contain polyunsaturated fats.

Other hormones responsible for the development of muffin top include leptin and cortisol. For instance, a report published by Huffington Post states that stress and worrying too much could cause cortisol (produced by the adrenal cortex) levels to rise. Although this in itself is not a bad thing, belly fat cells usually contain up to four times more cortisol receptors compared to other cells in the body. This means that whenever your body's cortisol levels rise, the likelihood of developing muffin top increases as well.

Finally, high insulin levels usually cause visceral fat to accumulate around the waist. In addition, high insulin levels prevent fat-releasing hormones like glucagon from working properly. This is according to the same report published by Huffington Post.

Why You Should Never Believe The Spot Reduction Myth

Targeted fat loss or "spot reduction" is a popular idea that has been around for decades, according to Yale Scientific (a Yale University science publication). Proponents of spot reduction believe it is possible to lose fat around certain body areas by exercising those parts alone. On the other hand, the opponents of this idea believe that it is nothing more than a myth.

Researchers and scientists have carried out studies to determine whether targeted fat loss works. For example, researchers at the University of Connecticut monitored 104 people who exercised their non-dominant arms for one week. At the start and end of this study period, the researchers used an MRI scanner to assess levels of subcutaneous fat in the arms of all participants. The results showed that fat loss in the arms that were involved in resistance training as well as arms that did not undergo training was more or less the same.

Another study carried out by researchers at the University of Copenhagen found that blood flow and breakdown of fat cells in the legs of people who performed single-leg extensions did not show significant differences.

According to Yale Scientific, spot reduction does not work because exercises that target specific body parts rarely burn many calories. In addition, body fat is usually in a form called triglycerides. The problem with triglycerides is muscles cannot use them directly as fuel. The body has to break them down into free fatty acids and glycerol in order to use them as fuel. Moreover, since triglycerides occur throughout the body, exercises that target specific parts of the body are unlikely to get rid of a muffin top.

Muffin Top Exercises That Will Help You Lose Body Fat and Eventually Muffin Top

Kickboxing is a great muffin top buster because it combines various cross body movements like sidekicks. This is in addition to high-intensity moves like side-to-side jumps as well as twists. If you have never participated in a kickboxing event, hire a professional to put you through the paces. A report published by Yale Scientific states that high-intensity exercises such as kickboxing are effective because of an effect called after-burn, which is an increase in the resting metabolic rate for up to 24-hours after exercise.

Getting Fit After 40

If you are like me, I turned 40 and my metabolism stopped. I mean it screeched to a halt. I was no longer able to lose 5 pounds in a week by just eating salads and gone were the days where I could just run a few times a week. With kids and a job, exercise is tougher to fit in. On top of that, my 40's brought with them a series of injuries that I am trying to work around. I soon figured out that I had to work smarter, not harder to meet my fitness goals.

It's obvious to anyone over 40 and 50, staying fit isn't as easy as it used to be. At middle age, it seems that our bodies have priorities other than building bigger muscles and looking like a 20-year old. Don't even get me started talking about the demands of our day-to-day lives that leave little time for exercise. Regardless of age, fitness is always important to our health. However, it's extremely important to maintain a fitness program during middle age. A healthy active routine can help prevent or substantially slow down a number of health concerns that seemingly crop up suddenly as we enter middle age, including: Bad cholesterol levels, stroke, hypertension, colon and breast cancer, muscle and joint aches, type 2 diabetes, depression, heart disease and bone loss. It can also help slow down the aging process and the decrease of strength and energy. Not to mention the tendency for weight gain as our metabolism slows down.

I was surprised to learn that after 40, you don't need a lot of exercise to achieve these goals. In 2008, the Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, published by the U.S. DHHS, adults can gain substantial health benefits with 2.5 hours (150 minutes) moderate aerobic activity per week. That's just 21 minutes each day of the week or 50 minutes of activity 3 days a week.Or, just 1.25 hours (75 minutes) of vigorous aerobic activity per week. That's just 10 minutes each day of the week or just 25 minutes 3 days a week. Physical activity should be at least 10 minutes at a time.

For those of us who are working, it still sounds like a substantial commitment. But to maintain my health (both physical and mental), it is no longer a luxury that I get to do in my spare time. I have to be smarter about committing to the exercise and then executing it during the week or weekend.

I don't care who you are. If you are a mom who has kids, make sure you take time to fit in exercise. It benefits not only you, but those beautiful children of yours!

We all want to stay fit but here is the deal, it is harder once you turn 40. For some great diet tips, check out The Truth About Fat Burning Foods: or if you have a toddler, check out Talking To Toddlers:

Fight Acne And Blemishes With These Great Tips

Acne blemishes
Acne breakouts can make you feel bad about yourself and lower your self-esteem. Don't let acne destroy your confidence or ruin your life. Below are tried and true tips that can help you clear up your skin and give you a stunning visage. All you need is a bit of time and some effort to look and feel your best.

Your acne flares up due to excessive oils in your skin. The problem with most treatments is they cause your skin to dry out. However, if you apply some natural tea tree oil to the affected areas, it can help reduce your blemishes.

Most people automatically respond to acne with the need to pop the so-called pimples. It is best not to, but if you feel you can't resist, it is important to start by washing your hands thoroughly. This way, you will not cause more bacteria to build up and you can ensure that you are doing less harm.

Don't pick at your acne lesions, even if it feels tempting. Doing so will cause major irritation and it can make your problem worse. In fact, this act alone is what causes your skin to scar.

If you are experiencing a bout of acne near your mouth, pay attention to teeth whitening products you may be using. Believe it or not, some toothpastes, mouthwashes or even teeth whitening strips can exacerbate or lead to acne. One of the most sensitive areas on your face is near your mouth, so take care not to use harsh products.

Stress can make your acne worse, so if you already suffer from acne, try to figure out ways to calm yourself. No, acne is not caused by stress, but it can become worse because of it.

Acne occurs in people with oily skin, so anything that helps dry your skin can help your acne problem. Spending time in the sun is one way to help with your oily skin. When you first go out into the sun, you may notice that your acne gets worse. However, if you keep going outside, you will start to notice over the course of a couple of weeks that your acne is starting to clear up.

Did you know that your bedding can re-contaminate your face with dirt and oils? If you suffer from acne, changing your bedding often is an important step in the recovery process. Make sure you at the very least change your pillow cases daily and launder your sheets often. Better yet, keep an extra set handy!

Natural products are a lot more helpful for those that suffer from acne. Over-the-counter cosmetics contain harsh chemical that make your acne worse. If nothing seems to be helping your case and your pores are constantly blocked, switch to using only natural skincare products.

Battling acne isn't easy, but vitamins and minerals (especially zinc), can help you. Choosing to include a zinc supplement in your daily diet can help clear your skin of blemishes by eliminating the free radicals that often affect your skin.

Making the right choices for your skin is never easy, and taking it one step at a time is a good start. Use what you have learned today to help clear your skin!

Tips For Breaking Out Of Your Weight Loss Rut

Weight Loss Advice
Many will attest to the fact that weight loss can be difficult, and requires strong determination and hard work. Use the tips laid out here and apply them to make the most of your efforts. It's your prerogative to find the tips that work best for you.

One of the best ways to keep weight off is to avoid eating in the hours before bedtime. Avoid eating just before bedtime. Any food that you consume will not burn off and will quickly turn into more fat. Spend the hours before bedtime involved in some activity, and you will not be tempted to have a nighttime snack.

If you're attempting to lose weight but you have a potato chip problem, try switching to baked chips. Baked chips are often thirty percent less in calories or fat without a big difference in taste.

When you are trying to lose weight, keep a container of walnuts close by to help keep you from feeling hungry. Research has shown that if you eat walnuts along with your normal breakfast, you are less likely to overeat during the day. Walnuts are another delicious, healthy snack.

Keep plenty of healthy snacks handy. One way to always have a healthy snack is to purchase a plastic container which has a lid. Buy plenty of healthy and nutritious vegetables. Clean and peel the vegetables, and put them on ice in the container and place in the fridge. It's great to have a healthy snack ready to grab when you are on the go!

Reward yourself for following your diet or you will quickly get discouraged. Rent a movie, go shopping or get a massage. You can buy new clothes that you can feel confident wearing and that can feel rewarding. It also can keep you in a positive mood and keep you motivated to keep going.

One great way to work on weight loss would be to get a monitor for your heart. Heart rate has everything to do with how effective your cardiovascular workout is going to be. When you have heart rate monitors helping you, it will allow you to know what your heart rate will be while you work out.

Water is very beneficial if you want to maintain your weight loss regimen. Our bodies need to drink about eight full glasses of water each day to stay properly hydrated. You'll want more water when the weather is hotter. Drinking plenty of water will keep your digestive system moving and make you feel fuller, so you won't overeat.

A good weight loss strategy to follow is to make use of smaller dishes. When you use over-sized dish plates, you can inadvertently overeat due to dishing up larger portions. Ideally, your meal should easily fit on a plate that measures 9 inches in diameter. Anything larger is is probably too big in size.

There is no guarantee that every weight loss tip will work the same for every single person. It is really important that you only focus on your own goals and achievements, not what others are achieving. If you are determined, you will get where you need to be, despite obstacles.

Weight loss can be a very personal life change for everyone. It involves particular needs of an individual, along with personal plans and goals. This vast world has so many treatments, training regimens, and techniques that it can seem a bit confusing as to where you need to begin. These tips can help you make sense of the confusion.

A good way to lose weight is to start eating more fiber. Eating foods that contain more fiber, such as oatmeal and whole wheat bread, will keep you full longer. They are also low glycemic, which means they'll be less likely to be stored in your body as fat.

Join a weight loss program, such as Weight Watchers. Groups such as these require you to weigh in regularly, and many people find this motivating. They work harder to exercise and regulate caloric intake so that when they are weighed, everyone will see that they have lost weight. Many people find this method to be successful.

If you are overweight, consider weight loss as a way to ease joint pain. If you begin making changes for a healthier lifestyle, your body will benefit. Losing weight minimizes pressure and strain on joints, and is worth trying before considering more radical chemical treatments. Sometimes, all you need is a change!

Potato lovers who want to lose weight can make a very delicious mashed potato substitute using cauliflower. Boil cauliflower like potatoes in a pot of water and add chopped onion for added flavor. Use vegetable of chicken broth when mashing to add even more flavor. Then you'll have a great side dish that has all the nutrients contained in the cole family but with only a fraction of the amount of carbs.

A really good way to lose weight is to stock up on bottled water and keep a bottle with you at all times when you're out and about. By having bottled water readily available, you won't have to resort to drinking an unhealthy drink like soda or a mocha latte.

One awesome way to take off the pounds is to run on the beach. The sandy terrain increases resistance when compared to grassy or concrete areas.

A great way to help you lose weight is to pour a protein shake over a bowl of dry oats. When people think of oatmeal, they probably think of cooked oatmeal, but that's not the only way to eat oats. With a small protein shake poured over oats, you'll have yourself a healthy meal.

A sneaky form of weight-loss sabotage lurks in your cupboards and cabinets. If you want to simplify your efforts at losing weight, first, clean out your cabinets of all high-fat, high-sugar, low-fiber foods. It may seem wasteful, but if those foods aren't in the house, you won't be tempted to eat them in the first place.

While weight loss is entirely a personal life change for everyone, it does share the main goal of having a healthier weight, along with additional benefits such as diminishing or eliminating some health issues. As you have seen in these tips, there are various approaches; however, they are all created around living healthier at a better weight.

Tips And Strategies On How To Look Young

Aging - How To Look Young

Aging is something that happens to everyone. We all get older. A vast majority of us look to this period of our lives with dread and worry, but it does not have to be that way. Aging can actually be quite a positive experience. This article will offer some tips to gracefully age.

A lot of women will do anything to prevent the signs of aging from showing. There are several products on the market these days to help. They are marketed literally as anti-aging creams. If you want a fresher look and a younger look then finding the right anti aging cream for you is a good idea.

Go nuts with nuts! Nuts are one of the worlds most perfect foods. They are filled with important vitamins, minerals and fats that help our bodies stay in the best shape they can be. They are a great snack food as they really help us fill up without having to eat a lot of them. Be careful with them though as they are high in calories.

Quitting smoking is one of the most important health tips at any age but as you get older, you are going to hear it more and more from doctors and friends. Smoking does not only lead to cancer, but it will also accelerate the aging process of your face.

You will develop more lines around the eyes and mouth.Always make certain that you spend sufficient time sleeping. Getting seven to nine hours of sleep each night will help you keep a healthy hormone balance, and keep you feeling more relaxed. Not getting sufficient sleep will cause you to be grouchy and less likely to enjoy your life.

Drink eight or more glasses of water every single day. Water does a lot of things that help your body combat the signs of aging. Get Fit With These Simple Fitness Tips

Physical fitness tips
As you get older it is very important to maintain a good level of fitness. In this article we will show you different ways in which you can keep yourself in good shape. Apply the following advice on fitness to your every day life, so as you age, you can better adapt to the changes in your body.

In order to maximize your weight fitness routine, try loading up your bench press with 25% more weight than you could max out at. Do not attempt to complete the exercise, just hold the weight above you with a spotter's assistance. Next, take the weight off and show what you've got.

Fitness isn't something that necessarily has to be done at the gym. Fitness is all about consistency! A good thing to do to get fit and not overwhelm yourself, is a daily one hour walk. For those on the heavier end of the scale, you'll be surprised by just how much difference a one hour walk every day can make.

A really good way to help you get fit is to make a small protein shake whenever you feel the urge to eat junk food. By adding just a scoop of protein powder, some ice, and a little bit of splenda, you'll have a much healthier snack that won't wreck your fitness goals.

A different way to exercise and maintain fitness while also having a good outlet for stress are sledge hammer exercises. By hitting a sledgehammer against a big rubber tire you will work your upper body in a way that it is most likely not used to being worked. This shock to the body will boost fitness.

When starting a new fitness plan, especially if you have not worked out in a while or are seriously out of shape, do not rush it. 'All or nothing' is not the way to go when it comes to getting into shape. Start slowly, and work your way up to more intense workouts.

Words matter, so avoid using the words "exercise" or "workout" to describe exercising. Words can have a lot of emotions behind them, and if, for you, words like this are negative, you may be slowing yourself down. When you are calling it working out or exercising you should really call it playing basketball or riding a bike.

Add calcium rich foods, such as low-fat milk to your daily diet to boost the effects of your workouts. Try to consume at least 600 milligrams or more of calcium everyday. This about two glasses of low-fat milk. Also add other calcium-rich items to your diet such as broccoli, cottage cheese, low-fat yogurt, etc.

Exercise fitness workout

Reach your fitness goals by planning backwards. Pick when you plan to complete your goals and then work back from there by listing what short-term goals you plan to achieve along the way. This method of thinking, causes you to want to achieve those short-term goals because you are no longer viewing them as goals, but as deadlines.

A good way to build forearm strength is to crumple up newspaper. You should lay a piece of newspaper on any flat surface. Using your dominant hand, start with one corner of the newspaper and begin crumpling. You should crumple for about 30 seconds. After you have finished that, switch hands.

As was discussed in the beginning of this article, as you age your body will go through many changes. It is very important to understand that as we age it becomes harder to maintain your fitness level. Apply the advice from above, and you will live a life with a lot less aches and pains.

Many people think that they know all they need to know about keeping themselves in top shape, but you can always learn something new that can kick your fitness routine up a notch or two. The effective tips found in the article below can help you do that, starting today.

If you want to burn off that excess fat, you should work on doing strength training exercises. Not only will these exercises burn calories while you're going them, but they'll build up muscle. The more muscle you have, the more calories you'll burn at a resting rate. It's why when you don't take in enough calories each day, your body starts to burn off your muscle rather than the excess fat. If you're taking in less calories, your body tries to eliminate what it is using the most.

One way to stay healthy and fit when working out is to do all that you can to prevent neck injury. Never exert yourself without proper guidance and knowledge. Always use proper form when performing any type of strength building exercise. Be sure to stretch your neck properly before and after the workout.

Be sure to wear shoes that fit to aid you in your fitness routine. Ill-fitting shoes will cause multiple problems including blisters, ankle pain, knee pain, hip pain, and an number of other issues.
If you think your shoes may be causing problems, first be sure that they are not too old, as shoes can have a wear-in pattern.

Also, check with a physical therapist or podiatrist as they may be able to provide you with inserts for your shoes. Motivation is often a problem when people exercise, especially if you exercise alone. Find an audio version of a book that you really want to read and listen to it only when you exercise.

Wanting to find out what happens next will motivate you to work out longer and more often.Try your best to push yourself every time you work out. Your body gets used to the same workout regimen over and over so try to switch it up and push yourself each time. Try to work out different areas of the body so you let others rest while building other areas.

Watching what you eat plays an important part of fitness. You should eat 5 small balanced meals of grains, protein, dairy, and fruit or vegetables each day. In between meals, you should eat small snacks. All of these foods should be low in sugar and saturated fat. GLOBAL FITNESS MEDIA SHOOT 12182009 108 from Flickr via Wylio

If you have trouble staying motivated when working out, consider hiring a personal trainer. As experts of fitness, personal trainers push people to their limits, and help them achieve their fitness goals. After a few sessions you will know exactly what you need to do to keep fit, even without guidance.

So, don't think that you know all you need to keep your fitness level high and your body in tip-top shape. As you can see from the practical and effective tips in the above article, there is always something new to learn. These pointers can make getting fit more interesting, or even more fun!
