If you are familiar with working out and you want to sculpt your body, build definition and tone, or simply become stronger, it is usually better to stick with free weights.

However, if you are a man who is starting out and wants to build brawn and muscle, it is better to avoid the temptation to go to the free weights and starting looking like a macho man right away.

A machine doesn't build strength or muscle as fast as free weights, free weights are much better for muscle Hypertrophy.

It does prevent injury and gets your body used to a workout. Many men want to hit the ground running when it comes to fitness. This really isn't a good idea. Also there is less of a learning curve to using the machines.

They will normally have pictures for how to set up and operate the machine. Since the exercises are guided, you will have less chance of dropping a weight or doing an exercise improperly.

If you are injured, a machine can be used to isolate a muscle without doing additional harm to the other injured parts of the body. Also machines will get your muscles used to lifting weight.

However, the advantages of the machines will normally end about there. Studies have shown that free weights will work more muscle groups than machines will.

You will become stronger faster by using weights. This is important to men or women who want to gain weight, add brawn, or tone muscles.

The free weights will work more muscle categories at a time. Also your free weights will cause you to burn more calories because your body has to work harder just to simply hold the free weights.

It should also be noted that free weights allow for the maximum range of motion when doing a Muscle building routine.

Because you are able to sculpt the muscle over its total range, this will allow you to build a more defined look in your arms, chest, neck, and forearms. The free weights include everything from dumbbells, barbells, and medicine balls.

When using free weights make sure you have proper instruction from a coach or personal trainer.

You don't want to use the free weights improperly because you can seriously hurt yourself. Make sure you ask for a spotter if you are trying to max out your bench press or other exercise.

If you are doing any sort of dead lifting, use a back brace. You could throw your back out if you inadvertently twist when picking up a barbell off the floor, for example. Always listen to your body when using free weights. If you are shaking, stop and rest.

You don't want to lose control.

As long as you follow these precautions, you will get better muscle building results with free weights.
